Abstract
The proliferation of 17th and 18th century fairy tales in Europe centuries occurred as a result of three literary movements: the establishment of the literary fairy tale, the oriental fairy tale, and the establishment of the comic and traditional fairy tale. I aim to examine the functions and structures of fairy tales and their implications on 17th and 18th century French society. With the close examination of origins, functions, and structures of tales written by Charles Perrault and Marie d'Aulnoy, I aim to answer these questions. At the same time, I discuss how fairy tales within the period influenced works of modern day. Additionally, there will be a discussion on contributing factors of the revival of fairy tales in modern day.
