Abstract
It has been suggested that the key issue in the structure-function correlation in enzyme catalysis is electrostatic stabilization of the ionic transition states. In order to mimic receptors in biological systems we designed a novel hydrophilic macrocycle, 10, with an electrostatic dipole across its hydrophobic cavity. The dipole moment would be established between a positively charged Fe(II)-terpyridyl complex on one end of the macrocycle and the two carboxylate substituents at the opposite end of the receptor. An experimental strategy based on a convergent synthesis is presented.
