Abstract

The polagraphic method should be able to determine the presence of hydrogen bonds in ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in carefully buffered water solutions. The wave-height for the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid solution is about one-half the height in basic solution. This would seem to indicate that the intermediate reduction product is formed by the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid medium. This intermediate is stabilized by the presence of a hydrogen bond, so that further reduction to the hydroxy benzyl alcohol is not possible at the dropping mercury electrode.
