Abstract
This project is a small scale computer accompaniment/harmonization system that allows users to harmonize a melodic line based on the genre that they are trying to emulate using a midi device for simple melodic input and a Hidden Markov Model for chord prediction. The system uses pluggable models so that the genre can be changed on the fly. The results are fairly good, as the system can successfully emulate the genres that it has been trained on. However there are clear limitations as rhythm, dynamics and overall form are missing from the system output. A more complete system would examine and integrate these musical characteristics as well.
