Abstract

Despite the emphasis on endurance and persistence, nationalism, Korean or otherwise, is a relatively recent ideological development. Nationalism first became prevalent in North America and Western Europe during the later eighteenth century. The American and French Revolutions are considered key events that signaled the advent of nationalism, and it was during this time that nationalist ideology found “powerful and explosive expression in radical politics.” Nationalism began to develop in Korea nearly a century later, during the closing years of the nineteenth century. Relative to the alleged five thousand year history of Korea, nationalism has dominated the political and cultural landscape of Korea for only a very short period of time. However, Nationalism is, quite possibly, the most important and influential political ideology that has shaped the development of Korea in the past century.
