Description
This print depicts the rapids in the Valle del Sestaione, which drops from the Tusco-Emilian Appenine mountains. It joins the Lima River, which eventually flows into the Tyrrehnian sea north of Pisa. Stillman concentrates on the flowing water and rugged rock formations to create a dynamic but centralized composition. His control over the medium is evident in the delicate tonalities and sharp detail, which gives the work both concreteness and a palpable sense of atmosphere.
