Abstract

Anyone who has approached the High Peaks from the south has driven past the imposing ruins of a blast furnace beside the road into Upper Works. What was this huge pile of carefully cut Adirondack granite? How did it work? Who developed this remote iron mine deep in the wilderness? How did the Tahawus mine fit into the larger picture of exploration and settlement in the Adirondacks? This illustrated presentation will investigate the development and significance of the McIntyre Iron Works.
