Biographical Information
A Representative from New York; born in Salem, Washington County, NY, February 22, 1779; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced practice in Salem, NY; district first Congress, Committee on Education and Labor (Forty-second); Assistant secretary of the Treasury 1873-1874; employed in the United States Coast Survey 1874-1880; special agent of the War Department 1880-1887; conducted a prep school in Ithaca, NY, and gave private instruction to students in Cornell University; moved to Tennessee and became president of a company at Cumberland Gap to promote the sale of agricultural lands in that vicinity. Died July 31, 1891.
