Perspectives: Senior Art Exhibition – A Few Sponges

Abstract

The body of work I have produced explores the relationship between visual and oral language. The effect both elements, written words and visual images, have together gives the presentation an entirely alternate meaning. Not only do I intend for the viewer to interpret each element separately but to consider the text as part of the visuals, as well as the visuals amplifying the text. This idea stemmed from my childhood interest of reading comics and graphic novels. I was always consumed by the graphics as well as engaged in the story the text read. Currently, the technology era is upon us and platforms such as Instagram function on images typically accompanied by superficial short captions. I find the juxtaposition between the visual poetry I create and social media visuals interesting because one is based on interpreting denser content whereas the other supplies transparent and less substantial content.

The body of work I have produced explores the relationship between visual and oral language. This idea stemmed from my childhood interest of reading comics and graphic novels because of how the visuals amplified the text. The technological era is upon us and media trends contain both images and superficial short captions.

The trivial social media trends are juxtaposed with my purposeful visual poetry. I intend for the viewer to interpret my dense content by examining the visuals and text both independently and collectively.
