Description

Stillman wrote to Charles Eliot Norton in 1872 that he planned to return to Normandy to take photographs, and it seems, based on the configuration of the photographs in this album, that these are the result of that trip. They recall Stillman's close relationship with John Ruskin and their shared interest in Gothic architecture. There is a similarly bound album that repeats several of these prints in the collection of the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA. The Getty acquired the album from Samuel Wagstaff, Jr., an important early champion of Stillman's photography.
