Description

This is one of two views of this fountain with portraits of two of Stillman's daughters in this album. Lisa Stillman was born in 1865; she was the daughter of Willam Stillman and Laura Mack, who died in 1869. Effie Stillman, born in 1872, was the eldest child of Stillman and his second wife, Marie Spartali. This photograph and 4.37 in this album also present an interesting incidence of correspondence between Stillman's photographic work and Marie Spartali's painting: the fountain appears in Spartali's By a Clear Well, Within a Little Field (1884, pencil and watercolor, with gold, on paper, location unknown). Spartali's work has three figures, arranged differently, and she expressively changes the scale of the fountain to make it appear much smaller relative to the figures.
