Description

This print is depicts a young girl standing at a rustic fountain. Anne Ehrenkrantz has astutely connected it to conventions of both Pre-Raphaelite painting and contemporary photography, but she erroneously identifies the subject as Stillman's third daughter, Effie. Effie is depicted in two other prints in this album with her older sister Lisa. Effie's hair has a very different cut, and she wears a conventional bourgeois outfit, rather than the tattered skirt and dirty boots of this figure. It seems much more likely that the girl depicted here was a local who served as a model.
