Description

Ancient stone quarries from which the Greeks extracted the material necessary for the construction of temples, roads and flood defenses. The Latomie were, also, used as prisons: in particular, the historians recall the Carthaginians prisoners, captured by Gelon in 480 BC at Himera, and the Athenians in 413 BC. The Latomies constitute one of the greatest attractions of the archaeological patrimony of Syracuse, in particular those of the Stillman picture are called "Latomies of Paradise". In the same archaeological site there is the cave known as "Ear of Dionysius". (E. Bennici).
