Description

This and the next two photographs show Stillman's interest in the transformation of the infrastructure of Rome - the views capture one stage of the construction of the walls along the Tiber, which was prone to flooding. Album 6 in our collection includes two views from the same site taken between 1862-1865, when the riverbanks were still completely unprotected. Building on the opposite bank is now the main Ministerio dei Beni Culturali; Temple of Hercules Victor/Vesta and Temple of Portunus are visible in the center background; alternate version of 61.
