Description

This is a particularly luminous print, which captures the volume of this monument quite well. Stillman's compositional choice is also noteworthy - the photograph was taken after the construction of the first floodwalls in 1886, as the riverbank was undergoing modernization. He chose to omit the decorative 1715 century fountain of the Tritone, and instead include the more humble animal drinking fountain installed in the same vicinity. The photograph also contains a momentary, prosaic glimpse of everyday life in Rome - both a horse and a human are drinking from the fountain at the left side of the composition.
