Description

We know from letters to Charles Eliot Norton, a longtime friend and professor of art history at Harvard, that Stillman was in Laufenburg, Switzerland at least twice, in 1892 and 1895. The town was of great interest to artists of the Romantic period earlier in the 19th century. Stillman's interest seems in this group to be equally drawn to the picturesque bridge, the old architecture, and the rushing water. The clarity in many of the water, in particular, suggests that Stillman was working with relatively fast dry plates at this time. Note bicycle leaning against the fountain.
