Small Matters: The Story of Anne Perkins and Women at Union College

    Hope Relly-Cobb

When we think of the history of women at Union College, we likely think back to 1970, when female students were first admitted. But, of course, they had been there since the beginning. This documentary film examines the role of women and the contributions they made to the Union community through the lens of Anne Dunbar Potts Perkins (1835-1922). Residing on campus with her husband Maurice Perkins (a Professor of Chemistry), she was instrumental in campus, academic, and community life in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Utilizing primary source material from a collection of over 700 letters written by Mrs. Perkins and held by Schaffer Library’s Special Collections, the film helps to illuminate this hitherto forgotten perspective of college life during this time period.
